ENGLISH PLACE-NAME SOCIETY
The English Place‑Name Society was founded in 1923 with the purpose of carrying through a survey of the place‑names of the whole country.
Before the Second World War, the Survey was largely limited to ‘major’ place-names, the names of towns, villages, larger rivers, forests, etc. From the 1950s onwards rich collections of minor names, field-names and street-names have also been included. This detailed material provides an excellent resource for local investigators, social, urban and agricultural historians of the medieval and early modern periods, linguists, geographers and archaeologists.

THE HISTORICAL GAZETEER OF ENGLAND'S PLACE-NAMES
‘The Historical Gazetteer of England's Place-Names’ is a key piece of digital infrastructure for use in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. Its aim is to associate disparate content through place - everything happens somewhere, after all - and therefore to facilitate accurate searches across resources. These forms have been collected over the last ninety years as part of the English Place-Name Society’s Survey of English Place-Names. The Historical Gazetteer brings the four million+ historical place-name forms of the Survey, including those for hamlets, fields, and streets, into the digital realm, heralding a new era of chronological depth and spatial granularity in gazetteer provision
